Getting Started

What makes Ingwe Funeral Services different from other funeral insurers?

We’re the only funeral insurance provider in South Africa that offers livestock provision for traditional cultural ceremonies. While other insurers only provide cash payouts, we understand the importance of honouring your ancestors through authentic traditional celebrations. Our Traditional Heritage Policy provides quality cattle, sheep, and goats, while our Family Funeral Cover offers immediate cash benefits.

How do I apply for coverage?

Applying is simple:

  1. Choose your coverage type – Traditional Heritage Policy or Family Funeral Cover
  2. Complete the application form with all required details
  3. Submit supporting documents including ID copies for all members
  4. Pay your first premium to activate coverage
  5. Receive your policy documents within 31 days

What documents do I need to apply?

You’ll need:

  • Completed application forms for all members
  • Copy of ID document for principal member
  • Copies of ID documents for spouse and children
  • Proof of banking details for premium payments
  • Proof of first premium payment
  • Birth certificates for children under 18
How quickly does my coverage start?

Accidental Death: Coverage begins immediately once we receive your first premium payment.

Natural Death: Coverage begins after a 6-month waiting period for the principal member, spouse, and children.

Extended Family: 6-month waiting period applies for natural death claims.

What's the difference between Traditional Heritage Policy and Family Funeral Cover?

Traditional Heritage Policy:

  • Provides quality livestock (cattle, sheep, goats) for traditional ceremonies
  • Includes transportation to collection point within 150km
  • Honors cultural customs and ancestral traditions
  • Same family coverage as Family Funeral Cover

Family Funeral Cover:

  • Provides immediate cash payout upon death
  • Flexible use of funds for funeral arrangements
  • Fast processing within 96 hours
  • Option to choose your own funeral service providers
Can I have both policies?

No, you can only have one benefit plan per member. If you choose Traditional Heritage Policy, all covered family members must have the same policy type.

Who can be covered under my policy?

Principal Member: Ages 18-84 at entry, coverage continues for life Spouse: Up to 2 spouses can be covered during policy lifetime Children: From birth to age 26 (students and disabled children may qualify beyond 26) Extended Family: Up to 10 members (optional coverage)

What happens if I have children under 14?

Children under 14 receive coverage on a sliding scale:

  • 0-11 months: 20% of policy amount
  • 1-5 years: 25% of policy amount
  • 6-13 years: 50% of policy amount
  • 14+ years: Full policy amount
Can I add extended family members?

Yes! You can add up to 10 extended family members who are related to you and depend on you financially. Extended family coverage is optional and can be added at application or after one year of consecutive premium payments.

Traditional Heritage Policy Details

What type of livestock do you provide?

We provide quality livestock according to these specifications:

  • Cattle: 250-450kg live weight (150-250kg carcass weight)
  • Sheep/Goats: 35-60kg live weight (15-25kg carcass weight)

All livestock is sourced from reputable suppliers and meets quality standards for traditional ceremonies.

Can I choose the specific breed of livestock?

No, Ingwe Funeral Solutions exercises discretion in selecting the breed of livestock. We ensure quality animals that meet weight specifications, but specific breed requests cannot be accommodated.

How does livestock delivery work?
  1. Notification: Contact us immediately when a death occurs
  2. Collection Point: We’ll arrange delivery to a collection point within 150km of your location
  3. Transportation: We cover transport costs from farm to collection point
  4. Your Responsibility: You arrange transport from collection point to ceremony location
What if there's no suitable collection point near me?

We work to establish collection points within 150km of principal members. If this isn’t possible in your area, we’ll discuss alternative arrangements during the application process.

Do extended family members get livestock benefits?

Yes, extended family members can receive livestock benefits, but the benefit cannot exceed that of the principal member. Extended family members don’t qualify for accidental death benefits.

Family Funeral Cover Details

How much cash will I receive?

The cash payout depends on your chosen coverage level and premium payments. Contact us for specific benefit amounts based on your needs and budget.

How quickly are claims paid?

We process claims within 96 hours once we receive all required documentation. This applies to both Traditional Heritage Policy and Family Funeral Cover.

Can I use the money for anything?
  1. Yes, Family Funeral Cover provides cash that can be used for:

    • Funeral service costs
    • Burial or cremation expenses
    • Catering and venue costs
    • Transportation for family members
    • Memorial services

    Any other expenses related to the funeral

Premiums and Payments

How much does coverage cost?

Premium costs depend on:

  • Your chosen coverage type and level
  • Number of family members covered
  • Your age and the ages of covered members
  • Extended family coverage options

How do I pay my premiums?

Premiums are collected monthly via debit order from your bank account. You’ll need to provide banking details when applying.

What happens if I miss a premium payment?
  1. Grace Period: You have 1 month after the due date to pay without penalty
  2. Policy Lapse: If you miss 2 consecutive payments, your policy will lapse
  3. Reinstatement: You can reinstate your policy within 2 months of lapse
Are there any additional costs?
  1. Commission: If you use an intermediary, up to 10% commission may apply
  2. Transportation: You’re responsible for transport costs from collection point to ceremony location (Traditional Heritage Policy only)
  3. Premium Increases: Rates may be reviewed annually based on claims experience

Claims Process

How do I file a claim?
  1. Immediate Notification: Contact us immediately when a death occurs
  2. Claim Form: Complete the claim notification form
  3. Documentation: Submit all required documents within 6 months
  4. Processing: We’ll process your claim within 96 hours
  5. Payment/Delivery: Benefits are paid or livestock delivered
What documents do I need for a claim?

Essential Documents:

  • Completed claim notification form
  • Original death certificate (BI-5 or BI-20)
  • Copy of deceased’s ID document
  • Your contact and banking details

Additional Documents (if applicable):

  • Student registration for children 21-26
  • Disability confirmation for disabled children over 21

What if my claim is denied?

If your claim is denied, you’ll receive a written explanation. You can:

    • Request a review of the decision
    • Provide additional documentation
    • Contact our complaints department
    • Lodge a complaint with the insurance ombudsman
Can I get help with the claims process?

Policy Management

Can I change my coverage after applying?

Within 31 Days: You can cancel your policy and receive a full refund during the cooling-off period.

After 31 Days: Limited changes are possible:

    • Extended family members can be added after 1 year
    • You cannot change from Traditional Heritage to Family Funeral Cover or vice versa
    • You cannot reduce coverage levels
What happens if I want to cancel my policy?

You can cancel your policy by giving us 1 month’s written notice. However:

  • No premiums will be refunded
  • Coverage stops immediately after the notice period
  • You may be eligible for individual coverage continuation
Can I continue my coverage if I leave a group policy?

Yes! If you’re part of a group policy that ends, you have 30 days to convert to an individual policy with similar benefits. Contact us immediately if your group coverage ends.

What if the group policy is cancelled?

If your group policy is cancelled due to insufficient members (below 10), you’ll receive 1 month’s notice and can convert to individual coverage.

Special Situations

What about stillborn babies?

Stillbirth claims are covered, with a maximum of 2 stillbirth claims per family during the policy term.

Are divorced spouses covered?
  • At Application: Divorced spouses cannot be covered
  • During Policy: If you divorce while covered, your ex-spouse’s coverage ends immediately
  • Remarriage: You can add a new spouse (up to 2 spouses maximum during policy lifetime)
What about common-law marriages?

Common-law partners and customary marriage spouses can be covered, but you must provide full details when applying. Any status changes must be reported within 1 month.

Do students over 21 get coverage?

Yes! Full-time students are covered until age 26. You must provide:

  • Proof of full-time enrollment
  • Registration confirmation each year
  • Academic institution details

Part-time and correspondence students don’t qualify for extended coverage.

Exclusions and Limitations

What deaths are not covered?

Coverage excludes deaths caused by:

  • Terrorism or war (declared or undeclared)
  • Radioactive contamination
  • Illegal activities
  • Suicide (during first 12 months of coverage)
Are there any waiting periods?
  • Accidental Death: No waiting period
  • Natural Death: 6 months for all members
  • New Members: 6 months for additions to extended family
  • Suicide: 12 months exclusion period
What about pre-existing conditions?

We don’t require medical examinations, but deaths directly related to undisclosed pre-existing conditions may be investigated during the waiting period.
